The definition

A rookie scale contract is the fixed-length, fixed-salary deal a first-round draft pick signs, with the salary set by where they were picked rather than negotiated.

In HoopSim first-round picks sign four-year rookie-scale deals automatically on draft night: the first two years are guaranteed, year three is a team option decided after year two, and year four is another team option decided after year three. The earlier the pick, the bigger the salary. Second-round picks get two-year deals at the rookie minimum. When a first-round rookie deal ends, the team can issue a qualifying offer and make the player a restricted free agent. If a team drafts a player while its roster is already full, it holds their unsigned draft rights until it makes room.
